Youth Leading The Way: North Carolina

Empower and define yourself by embarking on the biggest, most breathtaking and unforgettable adventure of your life! That's what a summer spent with the Youth Leading the Way program is all about. This is Panacea Adventures premier 12 day wilderness learning experience, an amazing journey that will push you to your limits as you engage with an invigorating backpacking sojourn, combined with more adventure by way of whitewater rafting or rock climbing. It's fun first and foremost, but it's also a life-changing learning experience. In the wilderness you'll set team and individual goals, and through team exercises and discussions you'll develop as a person and as a young leader. Youth Leading the Way curriculum focuses primarily on evolving interpersonal development and individual empowerment. Through educational groups, process groups and journaling, students enhance leadership, communication and decision making skills, as well as improved esteem.

The Summit

June 15 - June 26

Upon completion, the students will have experienced the exhilaration of making it to the top of a mountain, crossing flowing rivers and navigating the remote wilderness setting Our unique wilderness curricula involving educational and process groups teaches leadership, decision making, problem solving, team-work, conflict resolutions and values clarification. Dedicated educators and councilors facilitate the curriculums to allow for students to transfer the "wilderness learning" to the "real world learning".

Ages 12 to 18 yrs old. Group rates available for parties of 6 or more.

Flight Information:

  • Arrive in Wilmington NC (ILM) between 7 PM and 11 PM on June 14.

Driving:

  • If you plan on driving to Panacea Adventures for the Youth Leading the Way program, please plan to be a Panacea Adventures on the 15th at 7:30 AM.

We reserve the right to alter or change the itinerary prior to or throughout the course as Panacea Adventures is committed to providing an above quality program. Itinerary changes may occur do to severe weather, motivation of students, unpredictable disasters, permit regulations, potential threat to safety. Comparable adventures/activities will be substituted when possible and you will be notified of any significant changes in the itinerary.

  • June 15: Introductions and pre-trip planning. Students will be fitted for all their gear, sort, organize and pack all f their personal and group gear for the 12 day adventure. Drive to Pisgah National Forest.
  • June 16-18 Rock climb at Looking Glass for 3 days. We will have ropes set up for all abilities to reach their true potential and see the epic views at the top of their climb. We will leave on a 3 day hike reaching peaks of 6,000 ft to Black Balsam.
  • June 19-24: Climbing Silvermine Ball, reaching peaks of 6,000'+ over Black Balsam. Navigating the Pisgah National Forest with only your compass, maps and friends; you will encounter the Appalachian's natural world at it's finest. Days will be filled with a constant buzz of actions and activities i.e. hiking, climbing, educational groups, journaling, process groups and environmental education.
  • June 25: Zipline and canopy tour
  • June 26: Closing, gear check in, family de-brief.

  • August 6-12: Hike from Burrells Ford Campground, west along the wild and scenic Chattooga River. Students will encounter the rich an d historic environment in its natural setting. Each day will consist of curriculums, educational groups and process groups to enhance outdoor skills, human skills and educational skills.
  • August 13-14: Overnight rafting on the wild and scenic Chattooga River.
  • August 15: Closing, gear check in, family de-brief.
